Majestic mountains provide the perfect backdrop to tee it high and let it fly!

Located in the quaint town of Bend, Oregon, with the whitecaps of the Cascade Mountains towering to the west, The Club at Pronghorn – Nicklaus kicks off our must play journey to mountain-based golf courses with one of the Pacific Northwest’s finest renditions of mountain golf. Designer Jack Nicklaus masterfully routed Pronghorn in a way that best accentuates the beauty of the area while also challenging golfers with his signature risk-reward hole designs. And right when you think Pronghorn couldn’t get any cooler, your jaw drops to the turf when you get your first glimpse of the ancient lava rock outcroppings that peek out around the layout.

Old Works Golf Club in Anaconda, Montana, is another great installment to Nicklaus’ mountain portfolio and an absolute must play in Big Sky Country. Housed on the grounds of an old ore processor from the 1800s, Old Works still maintains its history with the presence of an old, towering smoke stack and truly unique bunkers made of black sag, a byproduct of the copper smelting process. The finished aesthetic is amazing, and with two par 5s over 600 yards, the challenge at Old Works is as immense as the mountains around it.

The Mountain Course at Wasatch Mountain State Park in Midway, Utah, can best be described as a true outdoor adventure. With a front nine that ascends two miles up a mountain and a back nine that descends that same trek, the looping journey at The Mountain Course is full of breathtaking views of Heber Valley, roaming deer, elk and wild turkey… Plus, you get to hit a few golf shots too!

Mountain courses certainly aren’t exclusive to the West, and TPC Old White in White Sulphur Springs, West Virginia greets golfers with some of the best on-course views that they’ll ever experience. Designed by legendary golf course architect Charles Blair Macdonald in 1914, Old White has greeted players for over a century, and as the home of The Greenbrier Classic, it has consistently proven that it’s hard enough for PGA TOUR pros, but fun enough for us average joes.

From a track designed by a trailblazing Golden Age architect to a course crafted by undoubtedly one of golf’s best modern designers, Sunday River Golf Club in Newry, Maine, is a Robert Trent Jones, Jr. gem that is a contemporary golf masterpiece set at the base of the Mahoosuc range. Dramatic elevation changes. Stunning mountain views. We assure you that there’s no better way to spend a Sunday morning than ripping a few drives through the crisp, Maine air at Sunday River.

Last, but certainly not least, Lakota Canyon Ranch Golf Club in New Castle, Colorado, gets up close and personal with the Rocky Mountains and presents golfers with significant elevation changes and views that they’ll never forget. The closing hole at Lakota Canyon Ranch is one of the finest in Colorado- just make sure you have your distances dialed in, because that forced carry is no joke!
